How we helped Crowdbuilding scale from rebel idea to long-term movement

We’re stuck in a housing crisis where most basic dreams - a second bedroom, a shared garden, a home near loved ones - have become out of reach. CrowdBuilding exists to shift that reality.

By empowering people to start building their own homes, together with their future neighbours, they offer an alternative to a system built for financial profit. The ambition? Not just to build 100,000 homes by 2035, but to return space, agency, and ownership to the people who will actually live there.

From side project to system challenger

CrowdBuilding began as a visionary side project within architecture firm Space&Matter. But momentum was growing, funding secured, and the brand needed to grow with it.

Momkai stepped in as strategic design partner to guide that evolution, working side-by-side with the founding team to define what this brand needed to become: credible, human, and built to last.

A multi-audience approach

We interviewed the team, mapped audience motivations, and studied the psychological journey of future homeowners — from skepticism to shared ownership. We spoke with municipalities, financial stakeholders, and civic advisors to unpack the language that would resonate across policy, local governance, and everyday frustration.

With those fundamentals in place, we helped CrowdBuilding transition from bold concept to credible alternative. We shaped a system that now speaks to residents, municipalities, policymakers, and investors alike.

A strategic foundation that holds the weight

As their team built the platform, we built the strategic frame that holds everything together — from tone of voice to visual world, from investor deck to onboarding flows, and from brand story to the long-term member journey.

The visual system is grounded in icons of growth and belonging, from bolts to soil to circular community shapes. It’s built to feel modular, warm, and local, just like the process itself. This positions the brand stylistically somewhere between the personal hospitality of Airbnb and the pragmatism of the Dutch housing platform Funda, the local equivalent of Zillow.

From first conversations to final key handover

The challenge in collective-led building isn’t inspiration. It’s endurance. From first interest to final key, the construction journey can take five years. We gave CrowdBuilding the tools to keep future homeowners engaged across time — and equipped the internal team to guide that journey with clarity, confidence, and care.

Today, CrowdBuilding is growing with multiple municipal partners and expanding its platform reach. The brand is ready to scale and help turn 100,000 housing dreams into a new kind of reality.

CrowdBuilding & Momkai

CrowdBuilding empowers citizens to take back control in an overheated housing market by building homes together with their future neighbors.

Momkai developed a strategic foundation and warm identity that helped CrowdBuilding scale from a bold architectural idea into a national platform trusted by both municipalities and aspiring homeowners. From investor decks to builder kits and onboarding journeys, we helped shape a movement ready to deliver 100,000 homes by 2035. (edited)
